Small Event examines attention as an act that assigns value. At the centre of an excessively ornamental frame is an ordinary street image: an old capsule machine standing outside a clothing shop, surrounded by mannequins, reflections, colour, and a handwritten SALE sign. Each element offers a minor invitation to stop, look, desire, or expect something.

The exaggerated frame repeats this mechanism in another visual register. Historically associated with value, status, preservation, and display, ornament separates the image from its surroundings and presents it as something that deserves particular attention. The ordinary encounter is elevated before the viewer has had the chance to decide whether anything significant has actually occurred.

The work draws loosely from the Tarot archetype of V. The Hierophant, understood here not as a religious authority, but as a structure of legitimisation — a system through which certain objects, images, gestures, or ideas are designated as worthy of attention. The frame performs a similar operation: it does not reveal value within the image, but produces the conditions under which value is expected.

The phrase “You could have kept walking” redirects this mechanism towards the viewer. Nothing required them to stop. Yet the moment they do, the insignificant scene has already become an event. The work therefore implicates its own visual strategy: the ornamental excess, central composition, and unexpected encounter are themselves devices designed to interrupt movement and capture attention.

Small Event does not ask what is important. It asks how little is required for us to begin behaving as though something is.
